CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

BELLS – THE UNLIKELY CANDIDATES

“Perfect. Good work, Lexi.”

With a triumphant smile tugging at my lips, I lower my bandaged hands, snuffing out the glowing fireballs floating in the air. It’s taken hours of careful practice to get to this point.

Ravius cracks his neck. “Let’s break for dinner. We’ve been sitting in this room for hours.”

A wave of exhaustion crashes over me and I nod, shaking out my trembling hands. The energy racing through me has only picked up since my manifestation.

It feels unbalanced, volatile. Like it’s missing a vital component to control the erratic flow of Vitae making my life a living hell. My mind isn’t ready to comprehend what that could mean.

“Your control is improving.” Ravius stands, offering me a hand up. “I am pleased with your progress.”

“I wish I could say the same.”

He frowns at me. “You’re not satisfied?”

“No, I…” My voice catches.

I can’t admit the truth—that I’m haunted by dreams of another man, another bond. My power rails against me at every opportunity, and no matter what Ravius says, I’ll never have control on my own.

I need Daniel.

And I need… him.

“Dinner,” Ravius states decisively. “Come along.”

Sighing heavily, I stretch my aching limbs as I follow him out of the hot office. Pain pulls at my bandaged hands and arms even though I continue to heal at an accelerated rate.

We’re halfway to the dining hall when Brunt jogs up to us without even breaking a sweat. He jerks to an immediate halt.

“Sir. We have an arrival at the gates.”

Ravius spins toward Brunt. “We’re not expecting anyone.”

He remains silent, shifting on his feet. “It’s urgent.”

Ravius glances longingly towards the dining hall and the awaiting food. “I’m sorry, Lexi. You’ll have to excuse me.”

“Of course.”

The pair disappear into the winter mist. Frowning to myself, I continue walking towards the imposing shadow of the dining hall until approaching voices stop me.

“Lex! Wait up!”

Michael and Felix are rushing to catch up to me, surrounded by other people heading for dinner. I don’t miss the nervous looks that are shot my way.

Everyone’s afraid of me.

I’m a freak, even among them.

Staring down at my feet, I’m engulfed into a tight hug by Felix. His soft blonde hair tickles my face as he clings to me, squeezing hard enough to elicit an exasperated giggle.

“Ignore them,” he says in my ear. “They’re just afraid of what a badass you are these days.”

“I’d prefer to be invisible.”

“Well… in the future, I’d avoid almost burning down their homes to achieve that. You’ve earned yourself a reputation.”

Groaning, I hide my face in his uniformed chest. “Brilliant.”

Patting my back, he releases me. Michael is watching us both with a small smile that brightens when I turn to him.

“How was training?”

I shrug and continue walking. “I’m improving, apparently.”

“Did you manage to conjure the fireballs this time?”

“Michael!” I shoot him a glare.

He glances around then waves me off. “No one’s listening. I doubt anyone will come near you ever again.”

“You guys really aren’t making me feel better.”

Felix slings his arm around my shoulders.
